“Art is too important not to share.” – Romero Britto
There is a deep and beautiful connection between artists and a work of art, and dentists and the practice of dentistry. Dentistry mimics nature in so many ways and nature is the source of much of the art that is produced. Artists are passionate about self-expression.
In Sabrina Maria Galaviz’s article she describes the physical reaction that her body feels when she has the ability to express her artistic passion. “ The pure joy that comes from these types of self expression is so fierce that it makes emotions radiate. The feeling in your chest you get when creating tell you that you can change the world.”
While I don’t think I can necessarily change the world through dentistry, I do believe I can have a big impact on peoples’ lives by helping them create and design a natural-looking expression of their smile. When people are not confident in their smiles, there are a variety of negative emotions such as shame and insecurity, which restricts them from expressing themselves. This lack of confidence has a profound impact on peoples’ quality of life and how others perceive them. My goal is to help people achieve a smile they are confident about so they can be themselves.
Smiling should be as natural as your breath. Vietnamese meditation teacher Thich Nhat Hanh encourages the exercise:
As you breathe in, say to yourself:
Breathing in, I calm body and mind.
Then, as you breathe out, think:
Breathing out, I smile.
The Elements of Art
There are 7 commonly referred to elements of art. These elements help a work of art to be analyzed and are the basic building blocks for any form of art.
- Color
- Line
- Shape
- Form
- Texture
- Point
- Space
As a cosmetic dentist, I get to use these elements of art as I help you create a smile that can be considered a work of art. My passion is to offer my patients with the best results possible using mastery in multiple disciplines including facial esthetics, digital planning, morphology, adhesion, function and occlusion. I will also help design your smile and achieve the results you desire through biomimetic cosmetic approaches.
As any artist would do, I will first create a plan. I will work with the finest materials to achieve my goal. Through creating a digital smile design, I can visualize the elements of art and ensure that both my patients and I are in agreement about the results we want to achieve.
“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” – Pablo Picasso
